Camera Operator: Drew Berry Camera: Bolex Paillard 150 Film Stock: Super 8 Kodak Vision3 200T Film Transfer: On8Mil Colour Grading: CMRG Video Restoration The latest addition to Ely's history on film is our newly shot Super 8 footage - the first film of this nature to be shot in the city and made publicly available for many years (that we know of). This footage was taken during lockdown and is from 1 of 2 test reels we've undertaken - it's been an incredible learning exercise with many lessons learned indeed. The focus is consistently soft throughout unfortunately which is entirely down to us (not a fault of the camera or the film). The result is no less enjoyable however and we hope it'll give you a taste of things to come. Pipeline Through the Fens (1968) - extract. Subscribe: http://bit.ly/subscribetotheBFI This striking documentary focuses on the construction of the hidden conduit for North Sea gas lurking under the picturesque Norfolk fenland. 'Pipeline Through the Fens' was filmed during the 12 weeks in 1968 it took to lay 43 miles of pipeline under the county. The film (made on behalf of The Gas Council) focuses on the considerable engineering achievement involved in linking sections of pipe (each one 40 feet long, 36 inches wide and weighing 4.5 tons) and burying them 9ft below the surface. The workers scrupulous care is understandable - you really wouldn't want to be trying to find a leak later on! WILDFOWL The Fens, Lincolnshire, UK. 1960s & 70s A miscelleneous compilation including clay pigeon shooting, several shoots at fenland locations in various weather conditions, rearing chicks in pens, copious footage of wild birds in flight, and a wildlife sanctuary run by the Fenland Wildfowlers' Association. Of particular interest is the Borough Fen Duck Decoy in use as a ringing station by the Wildfowl Trust, with birds being caught, ringed and released. We weren't expecting it to work at all given the meagre sum we paid but to our surprise we found it was in full working order. The camera even performed well during the initial part of the shoot but then suddenly succumbed to old age and subsequently went to ye olde camera shoppe in the sky. This ultimately forced us to find and use another Super 8 camera to complete filming but what we present here is some of the footage captured with the 'Boots' camera before it exposed it's last frame. In this episode, we delve into the rich folklore of the long lost Anglian fens. Heroes and phantoms had made the marshlands their home, often during tumultuous and decisive moments in history. Featured in this episode are a collection of tales. Hereward the Wake, Saxon England's last hero, stood stalwart against the Norman invaders under the command of Duke William. He held off the army by fortifying Ely Abbey, before the invaders made a bridge to cross to the isle, and hired a witch to curse the English into damnation. King Canute sought refuge after a late night fishing on the fens, and found it in the humble hut of a fisherman, whose tragic past had him on a path to vengeance, one the Viking king was willing to aid. Will o' the Wisps, also known as Jack o' Lanterns, lure unsuspecting travellers to their doom upon the marshes. The dancing flames are said to be fairies bent on misleading folk to their deaths in the sucking bogs and marshes. British Folklore, Myths and Legends is now on Facebook.
